In Baldi's Basics, you enter a schoolhouse to collect seven notebooks for a friend. Each notebook presents three math problems, but the third one is unsolvable. When you answer incorrectly, Baldi becomes hostile and chases you through the halls. He hears doors opening and running, and he speeds up with every wrong answer.

The school is filled with other characters that add to the challenge. The Principal detains you for breaking rules like running or entering restricted rooms. Playtime forces you into a jump rope game. It's a Bully blocks your path unless you give him an item. Gotta Sweep sweeps characters across the map, and Arts and Crafters becomes dangerous after you collect all notebooks.

You must manage a limited stamina bar and use items found around the school to distract Baldi or help you escape. The game creates constant tension as you balance exploration with survival. Its low-poly 3D graphics and odd audio add to the unsettling retro atmosphere.

There are two main modes: Story Mode, where you collect all seven notebooks and find the exit, and Endless Mode, where you collect as many notebooks as possible before Baldi catches you. Each run offers a different layout and item placement, encouraging replay.

How to Play Baldi's Basics

Navigate the school to find all seven notebooks. Each notebook triggers three math questions. The third question is always impossible to solve correctly, so answering wrong is inevitable and makes Baldi angry. Avoid Baldi and other characters while searching for the exit. In Story Mode, after collecting all notebooks, you must find and use the real exit to escape. In Endless Mode, keep collecting notebooks for as long as possible.

Tips for Baldi's Basics

Conserve stamina by walking instead of running when Baldi is not nearby. Use the look behind key to check if Baldi is chasing you. Listen for his ruler slaps, which indicate he is close. Use items like the energy flavored zesty bar to restore stamina or the scissors to cut Playtime's rope. Avoid the Principal by walking in hallways and respecting restricted room signs. Give the Bully an item to pass. Plan your route to collect notebooks efficiently and minimize backtracking. In Story Mode, locate exits early so you can escape quickly after collecting the final notebook.
